I have a pair of AMT3s and they are by far the best (though the 1Cs are not without charm). With a DCX you should be able to EQ the midrange with a little effort, and it could be worth it.Īlternatively, you could try a 3-way with a smaller mid. That's not to say that they don't sound great passive, because they do. I found that bi-amping with an electronic XO my 1Cs really did great things for them. Have you considered taking the Heil out of the hole? I would recommend you at least try it. The bookshelfs sound good, but the pyramids have that airy quality that a dipole can only acheive. I have a pair of AMT 1Cs (pyramid) and AMT 1D bookshelfs. Is it is power ring, cast faced, or something else? Is there a reason that the Great Heil from the AMT 1B bookshelf isn't doing what you are looking for? If I understand correctly, you have a 2-way tempest with a smaller Heil.

I have 4 pairs of Heils, including one Performance Series model, and my brother has a Tempest (I think) Model 8. I want the system to perform beyond what one would expect from appearances. I know about the need to position the back of the cone for phase. Would it be more likely to succeed if I stick with bi-amping and a active crossover system? Would it be better to size down the woofer to 7" or 6.5"?Ħ. Is there an easier way to select a good crossover than what I am suggesting?ĥ. What would be a truly great choice for the woofer? ( was thinking Eton 8-200/A8 Symphony)Ĥ. Will it or will it not work? Why or why not.ģ. Am I nuts? I already know I am (wife's advice), but about this idea.Ģ. (And, sell the DCX2496 after making the crossover.)ġ.

If the Tempest cabinet needs to be smaller, why not fill it and shape it better while doing so? But, how to pick a new crossover? My thought was to buy a Behringer DCX2496 DIGITAL CROSSOVER, bi-amp the tempest speakers with the newly installed woofers, determine the profile that works best and then design a crossover based on the results. The problem is I often go against convention. I have read and otherwise know the conventional wisdom about cabinet sizes and crossover issues. I am suggesting that a truly great, modern, 8" woofer, picked for speed, precision and flat to 3,500 hz range. The AMT 1 B's and Tempest were never known for their midrange performance. Most of this equipment I bought new years ago. I have an IVIE spectrum analyzer and test CD sounds to determine this. The frequency response of the system in the room (large room with virtually no standing waves, due to the positions of the openings to the rest of the house) is flat by adjustment of the crossovers only. Main sources are my Yamaha YP-D8 turntable, Sony CDP-2700 CD player or an ipod/ipad. The Luxman is connected to the second preamp outputs of the 3600. The Nakamichi is connected to the high pass filter outputs of the Martin Logan, which is connected to the preamp outputs of my Marantz 3600. The Tempest are driven by my Nakamichi 620 power amp. The AMT 1B's are powered by a Luxman MX-100 (which is basically a M-02). My subwoofer is an Abyss by Martin Logan. These separate speakers are aligned to prevent phase problems. Between the shelf and AMT 1 B's and between the AMT 1 B's and the Tempest are hard rubber pads that are upholstered with matching fabric.
